How to Find the Right Accountant for Your Sole Proprietorship

We're accepting new sole proprietor clients this fall!

So, here's what to look for, and what we offer.

Running a sole proprietorship in Canada means your business and personal finances are tightly connected.

Your business income flows through your personal tax return on the T2125, your GST/HST obligations depend on your revenue, and one missed deadline can ripple into penalties.

Finding the right accountant to help manage all of that shouldn't feel like a second job!

What Good Sole Proprietor Support Actually Looks Like

Not every accountant works with sole proprietors, and the ones who do don't all offer the same level of service. At minimum, a good sole proprietor accountant should handle your T1 and T2125 together (they're one coordinated filing, not two separate things), manage your GST/HST returns if you're registered, and be available year-round, not just during tax season.

If you're only hearing from your accountant once a year, you're not getting the full picture.

So here’s a little list of what to look for:

  1. Confirm they have sole proprietor experience. T2125 reporting, eligible business deductions, home office claims, vehicle expenses, and how all of that flows into your personal return is specialized work. Ask whether they regularly work with unincorporated businesses

  2. Ask what's included in your annual fee. Find out exactly what services are covered, whether GST/HST filings are included, and how often you'll meet with your accountant. At a minimum, you should be having an annual meeting to review your business, discuss tax planning opportunities, and make sure you're on track.

  3. Pay attention to communication. You want someone who responds within a reasonable timeframe and explains things in plain language. If you can't understand what they're telling you, the relationship probably won't be a good fit.

  4. Understand how they support you throughout the year. Some firms file your return and disappear. Others provide ongoing guidance, answer questions, and help you stay organized between tax seasons. Make sure their approach matches the level of support you're looking for.

  5. Ask about capacity. A firm that's intentional about how many clients it takes on is more likely to provide the attention and service your business deserves.

On That Note: We’re Accepting New Sole Proprietor Clients

Starting this fall, Arnason Accounting & Co. has hired a dedicated Tax Lead, which means we're reopening sole proprietor services to our waitlist and new clients this fall!

Over the past year, we paused onboarding because we would rather serve fewer clients properly than stretch our team too thin. Now we have the capacity to grow again without compromising on quality.

Here's what our sole proprietor clients receive:

  • Annual T1 and T2125 preparation & filing

  • Annual GST/HST filing (if registered)

  • A mid-year check-in to review how the year is tracking

  • Simple tracking templates to stay organized between filings

  • Year-round access to a team that understands your business

Onboarding re-opens this fall, and waitlist clients will be contacted first. This is a good fit if you're a Canadian sole proprietor (or planning to start one) who wants year-round support from a small firm that actually gets to know you.
